Thay pagoda -Tay Phuong pagoda 

     

Thay Pagoda, also called Thien Phuc pagoda, is located in the foothill Sai Son mountain in Sai Son commune and Quoc Oai district. The pagoda was built in the Ly Nhan Tong dynasty (1072-1127). The pagoda the Ly Nhan Tong dynasty (1072-1127). The pagoda was once resided by the monk Tu Dao Hanh. He organized classes, collected herbs to treat patients and organized games such as shuttle kicking, wrestling and water-pup- petry for people. People there respectfully called him "Thay" meaning "Teacher", hence the name of the Thay pagoda. The mountain and the village where the monk Tu Dao Hanh resided are also called Thay mountain and Thay village. Thay pagoda is a large relic complex of high artistic and architecture values with wonderful landscape. In front of the pagoda is a large pond called Long Chi or Dragon pond. In the middle of the pond is Thuy Dinh house or house over water where water-puppoetry is performed in festive days on the 7th of the third lunar month.

By the two sides of the pagoda are two roofed-bridges. The bridge on the left is Nhat Tien bridge leading to Tam Phu temple situated in a small islet in the middle of the Dragon pond. On the right is the Nguyet Tien bridge crossing the pond to the Thay mountain. The two bridges were built in 1602 with financial support of Phung Khac Khoan.

The Thay pagoda is in the shape of the Chinese word: three including the Lower, Middle and Upper pagodas. The sanctuary of the Upper pagoda is large. The system of roof system and beams is more than ten tons heavy but there only 36 joining holes but is very firm.

In the Upper pagoda, there is a hundred-petal stone dais carved in the Tran dynasty. Above it is the case containing a Court decree consecrating monk Tu Dao Hanh. Under it is a statue of the monk sitting a golden lotus throne in meditation. In the apartment on the left, there is a wooden statue of Tu Dao Hanh monk placed in a alter cupboard. In the apartment on the right there is a statue of Ly Than Tong (posterity of Tu Dao Hanh) on throne of Thai Hoa period (1499). Under the reign of King Le Nhan Tong of Vinh Thuan period (1735-1740), King Le Y Tong ordered two other statues to be made: one of a giant guard and a pair of phoenix to be place in front of the statue of the King. It was believed at the predecessor of King Ly Than Tong was monk Tu Dao Hanh.

The Middle pagoda is for worshipping the Trinity.

The Lower pagoda is for kowtow and pray.

Thay pagoda was roofed with curving tiles brought from Tay Phuong Pagoda by passing through hand along the 15 km long road in a day.

Thay mountain locks colossal in the plain. In the mountain, there is Cao pagoda and Thanh Hoa cave where monk Tu Dao Hanh passed away. In the cave, there are some nichers. It is said that those were the places where the monk placed his hands and feet on when he was dying. On top of the mountain, there is a Heaven market "In the morning, cloud dissolves, at noon the sun shines brightly. In the afternoon cloud gathers, in the evening, the moon shines "There is also Cac Co cave where insurrectionists took their lives after their failure in the struggle against foreign invaders; Upper temple dedicated to general Van Xuong, the venue of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc activist; one-roof pagoda standing against the rock. This was the place where President Ho Chi Minh stayed and work in the first days of the anti-French resistance war. There are also the cave of Wind, Thai Lao stone floor, temple dedicated to Phan Huy Chu a scholar of Thay village who wrote the book "A book about feudal dynasties, a great encyclopedia".

Thay pagoda is a scenic complex, a large relic and a Buddhist center of unique beauty as ex poet Xuan Dieu said". This is a unique beauty of a mountain and plain area beginning from the Tan Vien mountain range to the Thai mountain.

Tay Phuong Pagoda was built in Cau Lau mountain, for commonly known as Trau mountain. The pagoda was built in the shape of the Chinese word Three including 3 parallel hauses also called as Lower, Middle and Upper pagodas. Each pagoda has is own structure but are closely combined in a complex. 

The two-layer roof of Tay Phuong pagoda is unique with curving gables, making the space indoor airy, high and wide.

The most prominent feature of Tay Phuong pagoda is the collection of statues. It boasts 82 wooden statues of Arhats which are ranked of highest value in terms of sculpture art of Vietnam.

The statues of Amitabha and 8 Tantrayana about 3 metros high standing in 2 corners of the Lower pagoda and Middle pagoda. The 8 statues of 8 Tantrayana were carved in advancing or retreating positions of martial arts. Each is considered to be a typical statue of appearance.

In Upper pagoda, in a high dais is a Tam The statue which was meticulously carved. Beneath is the statue of the newly-born Duc The Ton finked by Muc Kien Lien, Xa Loi Phat, Dai Ca Diep and A Lan Da. Extraordinarily still are the 18 statues of the Arhats as big as real man. Some are sitting, some standing along the back wall of the Upper pagoda. Each has its own gesture, gait, size, character very lively and rare in Vietnam's sculptural arts.

The most prominent of them is the statue of Tuyet Son monk showing his body after 6 years of practicing asceticism in Tuyet mountain. The statue depicts a sitting aged, thin, bony body, protruding chin, hollow cheeks and eyes two long arms, one leg folding up, one hand in the lap. The monk was sitting in complete meditation. This is a statue of rare and high artistic value.

In the Thach That - Quoc Oai tour line, there are other reputed pagodas and temples such as One-hundred apartment pagoda in Tien Phuong commune, Tram pagoda in Phung Chau commune, Chuong My district, So communal house in Gong Hoa commune, Quoc Oai district, Dai Phung commune in Dai Phung commune, Dan Phuong district. There are also festival which is organized in Spring every 36 years such as Do festival in Liep Tuyet commune, Quoc Oai district, Tau festival in Tan Hoi commune, Dan Phuong district.
